Lottery online is one of the most popular forms of gambling. It involves buying a ticket that is drawn in a public drawing for a prize, such as money or goods. The tickets can be purchased in physical stores, at lottery kiosks, over the telephone, or on the Internet. People who are interested in winning the lottery often join multiple online lottery sites to increase their chances of winning. Some of these sites even offer free tickets for people who register.

Lao officials rig the lottery system to avoid large pay-outs, sources in the communist country tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings frequently show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky. For example, the winning number of the Oct. 14 drawing showed as 509 on some tickets but disappeared from others before the drawing, a source told the news agency.
Charles Zuckerman, a linguistic anthropologist with the University of Sydney, has studied gambling and lottery systems in Laos since his doctoral research in Luang Prabang from 2013 to 2016. His talk will explore how the government has rationalized the lottery as an economic activity that is coherent with socialist goals, and will discuss his ethnographic research on what it means to play the lottery in that context.
