Officials have been known to manipulate results by preventing certain numbers from being drawn or removing them from purchased tickets before the drawing, sources say. In October, for example, the winning number 509 disappeared from tickets purchased throughout the day before the drawing and was replaced only a few minutes later by 662. The reason for the change was unclear, but it may have been to prevent a large pay-out.
