His victory has not only changed his life but raised awareness about the Iu Mien ethnic group, a southeast Asian minority with origins in China who helped the American military during the Vietnam war and settled in the U.S. Among those celebrating with him at his Portland news conference was his wife, Duanpen, and a friend, 55-year-old Laiza Chao of the Portland suburb of Milwaukie. They bought the winning tickets together, and will split the cash. The trio plans to invest in a small business and help their family and friends.
