Lottery online is a type of gambling where people can play for money. Many states have legalized it, and some offer state-licensed re-sellers. Others have banned it altogether. Regardless, lottery online is popular in the United States and around the world. Hundreds of companies operate this type of online game, and some are even making big profits from it. The main players in this industry are GTech Corporation, which operates the Mega Millions and Powerball games in the United States, and Camelot Group, which runs EuroMillions and other European lotteries. In addition, some private gaming companies have gotten involved in lottery online.
In the United States, lottery revenues are used primarily for public education systems. A small portion is also used for health and social services. In Canada, the majority of lottery proceeds are distributed through an interprovincial crown corporation that is owned by the provincial governments. The organization operates four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. In addition, Lottery Commissions in each province/territory have their own lotteries.
Laos’ national lottery is privately managed, with business interests having a stake in the winning numbers. This has led to allegations of rigging the drawing results, sources in the communist nation tell RFA’s Lao Service. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number, 509, appeared only as a “5” on tickets purchased throughout the day of the drawing. This number was associated with a buffalo, which symbolizes good luck in Laos.
In the case of Saephan, a 55-year-old factory worker from the Oregon suburb of Milwaukie, the prize money will be split with his wife, Duanpen, and a friend, Laiza Chao, who contributed to the purchase of a batch of tickets. Previously, the pair had never won anything in their lives. They plan to buy a new house and invest the rest of the money. Saephan says he is still amazed that he won. He joked before the drawing that he and his wife were now billionaires, but that turned out to be true. The two are taking half the prize money, and Chao will take the other. The couple are members of the Iu Mien, a southeast Asian ethnic group who helped American forces during the Vietnam War, before fleeing to Thailand for fear of retaliation and eventually immigrated to the United States. They now live in Portland. The sash Saephan wears at his news conferences is an Iu Mien symbol. During the war, the CIA recruited Iu Mien from Laos and other south-east Asian countries to work as guerrilla fighters along the Ho Chi Minh Trail to send supplies and troops into Vietnam.
