Lao Lotto Controversy

Lao Lotto Controversy

Lao lottery is one of the most beloved forms of gambling in Laos, earning millions each week in profits. Winning numbers are broadcast live every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to keep fans captivated as they eagerly wait for another win. In response to concerns regarding its integrity, government authorities recently reduced the number of lotteries and cut drawing times – but these measures have failed to curb manipulation of results.

Recently, the lottery company operating the national lottery has come under scrutiny for allegedly manipulating winnings. RFA quoted a salesman at this company who told RFA that officials knew which numbers people picked and used that information to adjust odds accordingly. While no specific details are released by them nor disclosed publicly by them anyways, many lottery players have reported experiencing suspicious behaviors recently.

After winners have been announced, it’s not unusual for the numbers to shift around slightly; but some lottery players have started questioning whether these changes are genuine or part of some scheme. One such number 67, associated with cats as symbols of good fortune in Lao culture, became the lucky number three consecutive drawings during late September but suddenly disappeared from available options after one draw, prompting suspicions regarding fairness of the lottery system.

Concerns have also been expressed over how the national lottery is run: companies tied to ruling elites control it and pay an annual fee to run it; it remains unknown exactly how much profit these businesses make as a result of running the lotterie. One anonymous businessman told RFA he felt these interests shouldn’t be allowed to run the lotterie, believing this to be unfair for people living in Laos.

Although lottery gambling may be controversial in Laos, its popularity remains widespread. Families use it as an extra source of income and way to earn extra cash, while it also functions as an enjoyable social event that brings together family and friends; some local charities even use lottery draws as fundraisers! Despite its controversial reputation, lottery remains a great way for people to earn extra cash while having fun – although gambling in general (including lottery) remains illegal there are certain Special Economic Zones throughout Laos where legal gambling activities take place; online casino accepting players from Laos are prohibited;
