One such number 67, associated with cats as symbols of good fortune in Lao culture, became the lucky number three consecutive drawings during late September but suddenly disappeared from available options after one draw, prompting suspicions regarding fairness of the lottery system.
Concerns have also been expressed over how the national lottery is run: companies tied to ruling elites control it and pay an annual fee to run it; it remains unknown exactly how much profit these businesses make as a result of running the lotterie. One anonymous businessman told RFA he felt these interests shouldn’t be allowed to run the lotterie, believing this to be unfair for people living in Laos.
Although lottery gambling may be controversial in Laos, its popularity remains widespread.
