The Thai lottery (Thai: ; RTGS: salak kin baeng) is one of the two forms of legal gambling in the Land of Smiles, drawing twice a month on the first and sixteenth of each month. It is the world’s sixth largest lottery and is played by over 19 million people, representing 28.6% of the country’s population.

Unlike many western countries, the Thai government’s lotto is only available for purchase within the country. Ticket holders must present their ID card or passport to claim their prizes. The draw is overseen by a “Draw Chairman” who randomly selects a colored ball to initialize each machine and then selects balls to determine the order of lesser prize draws. Four-colored balls signify different prizes: yellow for 2nd prize, pink for 3rd prize, green for 4th prize, and blue for 5th prize. Then, officials remove the balls from the machines and announce their results.

Lottery tickets are pre-printed and include several anti-counterfeiting features, and they are only sold in ticket pairs. Besides a schedule of prizes and ancillary information, the verso of each ticket contains a series of unique numbers that must be entered to verify it as a winning ticket.
