Nevertheless, the city continued to run the lottery, which became known as the “Montreal Irish Sweepstakes”. However, sales of tickets dropped sharply after the legality of the lottery was debated. The Montreal mayor and the federal Liberal government fought the decision in court for several years, but eventually lost. In 1969, a change in the law allowed the provincial government to manage a lottery.
