Playing the Lottery Online in Laos

Throughout the years lottery-style games have become increasingly popular on the Internet. This trend is being fueled by the fact that many of these games do not require any physical ticket purchase, and thus do not fall under gambling laws. In addition, they are often offered at a premium on the base lottery prices. This premium is often supplemented with a variety of other forms of revenue generation, including ads and subscriptions. GTech Corporation, a firm based in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, administers 70% of the world’s online lottery business.

Lotteries are state-sponsored gaming activities in which people can win a prize, or share in a jackpot pool. The earliest known lotteries were held in Ancient Egypt, where prizes were distributed based on drawing lots. Despite their legality, lotteries are controversial. Some governments have banned them, while others have made them legal in limited circumstances.

In the United States, lottery revenues are derived from the sale of tickets and from gambling machines called video lottery terminals (VLTs). The majority of state-licensed VLTs are operated by GTech Corporation, which also provides software for the national Mega Millions game and several regional games. Approximately half of all US lottery revenues come from these machines.

Laos has a state-run lottery called the TOTO. It is similar to the national lotteries of other countries. The TOTO website is available in multiple languages and allows users to view results and other information. The site can be accessed from anywhere in the world, and is free to use. The TOTO website also offers a mobile app, which makes it even easier to play the lottery.

The lottery is a popular form of entertainment in the Philippines. It is a multi-billion dollar industry, and has created many millionaires. The lottery is not as big in the Laos, but it still has a place in the gambling psyche of the country. The government is looking to regulate the industry, but it will take time before a regulated environment will shape up.

Dr Charles Zuckerman will explore the many things that playing, choosing numbers and winning mean for people on the ground in Luang Prabang. He will examine the political, economic and moral history of the lottery since 1975. And he will look at how the lottery can shed light on the nature of state enterprise more generally in Laos. The talk will be based on ethnographic research carried out in the city during 2013-2016. The research was supported by the Australian Research Council and the University of Melbourne. The talk will be presented in Lao language with English translation. A short discussion will be followed by a Q&A session.
