In this talk, Dr Charles Zuckerman will examine the political and economic history of the Laos lottery since its inception in 1975. He will also look at the mechanics of the lottery system and consider what it reveals about state enterprise in Laos. Finally, he will discuss what it was like to conduct ethnographic research on the lottery in Luang Prabang and the many things that playing the lottery meant for people on the ground. He will also explore the way in which the lottery is being rationalized by the Laos government as an economic activity that is coherent with socialist goals.
