There are several different types of lottery games, including scratch-off tickets, instant games, and keno.

The first European lotteries were established in the 16th century, and soon spread to other parts of the world. In Canada, there are four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. All are operated by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which is a consortium of five regional lottery commissions owned by their respective provinces and territories: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon) and British Columbia Lottery Corporation (British Columbia). In addition to these national lotteries, many jurisdictions have local lotteries and keno.

Some of the largest recipients include Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission. In addition, the lottery is responsible for funding a number of national museums and art galleries.
