Lotteries in Laos

The legal status of gambling in Laos is a little bit complicated. While gambling is considered illegal in most of the country, there are Special Economic Zones where you can play casino games. These zones are usually leased out by the government to boost foreign trade. There are currently 3 land-based casinos in the country, offering a variety of popular games to players. In addition to these casinos, players from Laos can also gamble at many offshore online casinos.

In Canada, the national lottery is operated by an interprovincial lottery corporation, with regional lotteries run by provincial and territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon), and the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (British Columbia). The federal Liberal government has recently introduced an Omnibus Bill which includes a section on updating outdated laws concerning lotteries.

A recent survey found that Lotto sales were down about a third since the beginning of the pandemic. The Director of the Binh Duong Lottery Company Mai Thanh Binh said that sales are not returning to pre-pandemic levels because people are afraid to buy tickets on the streets, and they are staying home to avoid being infected with Covid-19. Those who do buy tickets are only buying one or two tickets instead of 10 like before, she added.

The lottery is the most important source of revenue for the state of New Zealand, accounting for a quarter of all public funding in the nation. The money is distributed by the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board to various charities and community organizations throughout the country. Lottery profits are not taxed in New Zealand.
