On Aug. 17, prime minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive asking the Ministry of Finance to reduce the number of weekly drawings and ensure greater transparency.
The lottery is not a form of gambling in the country. Gambling is illegal in Laos except for in Special Economic Zones, which are leased out to boost foreign trade. However, players from Laos can still gamble in several land-based casinos located outside the country. The most popular casino games are roulette, poker, and blackjack. The state-owned Loterias y Apuestas del Estado runs the country’s national lottery and the EuroMillions pan-European lottery.
