Some countries have a single national lottery, while others have several. Many states in the United States have state-run lotteries, and most Canadian provinces offer at least one. In addition, there are private lotteries in a number of nations.
The first lotteries were run in the 16th century as a way of raising money for public buildings and services. They were reintroduced in France at the end of the 17th century, as “public” ones for Paris municipalities (called Loterie de L’Hotel de Ville) and as “private” ones for religious orders. In this talk, linguistic anthropologist Charles Zuckerman will explore the history of lotteries in Laos since 1975, and ask whether the lottery can be rationalized as an economic activity that is coherent with socialist goals. He will also discuss what he learned about the lottery during his ethnographic research in Luang Prabang from 2013 to 2016.
