Playing the Lottery Online

Lottery games are played for a prize money or other goods or services, usually determined by a random drawing of numbers. They are generally regulated by government or private entities. The most common types are the national lottery, state lotteries, and public education system lotteries. Some countries also operate private lotteries. Lottery games are widely available on the Internet, with a number of websites offering them. Some of these sites charge a premium on base lottery prices, while others offer free play. Some states have also made it legal to play lottery-style games on the internet.

Despite the high popularity of online lottery games, they are not without risk. In addition to the possibility of winning a big prize, there are concerns about the security of personal information. Some lottery operators collect and store players’ personal information, including payment details, in order to process their purchases. Others are known to sell player information to other companies.

In Laos, the country’s communist government has been accused of rigging the state lottery to avoid large pay-outs, RFA’s Lao Service reported. Drawings for the state lottery have been reduced from two to one a week, and the winnings are now being handled in a more transparent manner. But Lao deputy finance minister and state lottery supervisor Sila Viengkeo told RFA that allegations of rigging were unfounded.

A Lao state official speaking on condition of anonymity told RFA that business interests with ties to the government have a stake in the state lottery. They want to avoid large pay-outs by manipulating the numbers in the drawings, he said. On Oct. 14 this year, for example, the winning number 509 appeared only as a five on tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing and disappeared after the winner was announced, he said.

For many poor people in Vietnam, selling lottery tickets is their only source of income. The social security systems of this poor country aren’t yet capable of handling the amount of less fortunate citizens who need to support themselves. For single mother Huong, a lottery ticket seller in Saigon, the daily profit she makes is enough to feed her and her infant daughter. On good days, she can sell up to 230 000 VN-Dong (about 10 US-Dollars). On bad ones, she only makes 180. Regardless, she prefers this job to the socially detested act of begging on the streets. Huong and her husband Manh spend about 16 hours a day walking around the city selling lottery tickets.
