The prime minister’s office recently sent a directive urging the ministry that oversees the country’s legal state lottery to work with the police to reduce illegal gambling in the city, RFA’s Lao Service reported. The directive said state lottery drawings should be reduced from two to one a week and winnings handled more transparently. In addition, the government should close down informal football and lottery chances sold through short messaging services, the directive said. It should also stop allowing business interests with connections to the ruling elite to manage the national lottery, a caller from Laos told RFA’s Lao Service.
