Lottery online is a type of lottery where players purchase chances to win prizes from the internet. It can be accessed by anyone who has an internet connection and has a computer or mobile device. There are many different types of online lotteries. Some are run by state governments while others are private companies. Some are even run by charitable organizations. Some of these websites also offer games such as keno and video lottery terminals.
Historically, lotteries were run by states and territories in the United States, but they have also been operated by federally-authorized private entities. Lottery profits are often used for public service initiatives such as education, roads, and disaster relief. The largest lottery in the world is the EuroMillions, which was launched in 2004 by the Camelot Group. It is a pan-European lottery with a prize pool of about EUR2.4 billion annually.
In Canada, the first legal lottery was introduced in 1967 after the federal Liberal government passed an Omnibus Bill containing a number of amendments designed to bring obsolete laws up to date. The bill was sponsored by then Minister of Justice Pierre Trudeau, and among the amendments inserted into the Criminal Code was one concerning lotteries. Previously buying a ticket on the Irish Sweepstakes was illegal, but this law made it legal.
Today there are four nationwide lotteries in Canada, administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation. The five regional lottery commissions that make up the organization are: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Yukon) and BC Lottery Corporation (British Columbia).
In Australia, lotteries are run by state governments or independent private companies under licence. These include the Tatts Group which operates state government-owned lotteries and licensed re-sellers Netlotto Pty Ltd and Jumbo Interactive which sell Australian lottery products over the internet. Lotteries are also a significant source of revenue for the national health system, with some of the profits from sales being directed to medical research. In addition, the government provides grants to a number of community organizations and sports clubs through the Lottery Grants Board. In New Zealand, the Lottery has four games: Lotto, Keno, Instant Kiwi, and Bullseye. The profits from the Lottery are distributed by the Lottery Grants Board directly to sport and recreation, community, and arts organizations. The Lottery Grants Board also provides a range of health-related funding through the Health Promotion Lottery. This fund is separate from the National Health Lottery.
