Lotteries are gambling games where people win money or prizes by selecting numbers or symbols on tickets. These games have existed for centuries and are found in many countries around the world. Originally they were government-sponsored but are now usually run by private companies. Some lottery games are free to enter, while others require a purchase to participate. Some are played on a computer or mobile device, while others are played by visiting a lottery agency in person.

In the United States, a large portion of state lottery revenue is used to fund public education systems. Other lotteries are used to provide funding for health-related programs, social services and other community needs. State governments also use a percentage of their lottery revenue to maintain state highways.

Unlike the US, which has several national lotteries operated by private corporations, Canada does not operate a single national lottery. Instead, it has four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. In addition, there are a number of regional lottery commissions operated by the five provincial and territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon and Northwest Territories) and British Columbia Lottery Corporation (British Columbia).

Most Canadians buy their tickets through one of these provincial/territorial commissions, rather than directly from a private company. However, in the early 20th century there were a number of privately-owned lotteries operating in Canada. In 1967, the federal Liberal government introduced a special law to bring up-to-date a number of outdated laws, including one relating to private lotteries.

The Quebec City mayor, who had been attempting to impose this “voluntary tax” on residents of his city, challenged the law in court, but was unsuccessful. The court ruled that this practice did not contravene the provincial gambling laws.

Lottery online is becoming a popular way to play, with many websites offering instant lottery games and other types of instant-win games for sale. Licensed re-sellers such as Netlotto Pty Ltd and Jumbo Interactive are the most popular suppliers of lottery products in Australia. Despite their popularity, these sites are not regulated by the Australian Lottery and do not offer a secure environment for players. Nonetheless, some people continue to use them because of their convenience and affordability.
