Playing the Lottery Online

Whether you’re an avid lottery player or just looking to see the results of the latest drawing, online lottery gaming is growing in popularity. In the US alone, there are more than 30 state-licensed websites offering a variety of games. The most common games are scratch-off tickets and lotteries, which involve playing numbers for a chance to win a prize. These games are available on a variety of platforms, including mobile devices and the Web. In addition to traditional lottery games, some companies offer instant-win games that are similar to scratch-off tickets but have a higher payout. These games have been around for a while and are very popular in the UK and Canada.

Many of these online lotteries operate through private companies that are legally allowed to do so in their jurisdictions. These private companies collect a percentage of the winnings for their services. In some cases, this is a percentage of the total winnings; in other cases, it is a fixed amount per ticket sold. In addition to promoting and administering the games, these private companies also provide customer service and technical support.

The legality of these private businesses is a point of contention in some countries. Some governments prohibit them while others regulate them. In Canada, for example, the provincial/territorial governments oversee the lotteries. The Interprovincial Lottery Corporation manages the four nationwide lotteries, which are Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. A fifth provincial lottery, the Western Canada Lottery and Gaming Corporation, operates in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Aside from the legal issues, lottery games have been subject to manipulation and other problems in the past. In Laos, lottery officials have been accused of rigging the system to avoid paying out large sums in prizes. Drawings frequently show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky, sources in the country told RFA’s Lao Service. The number 509, for instance, disappeared from tickets sold throughout the day on Oct. 14 before appearing in the final drawing.

Lao officials have responded by imposing new rules on the state lottery. On Aug. 17, the office of prime minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive asking the Ministry of Finance to work with the ministry of public security to improve transparency in lottery operations. The new rules will limit state lottery drawings to one a week and close off informal football and lottery chances purchased through short messaging services, the officials said.
