Lottery Online

Lottery online is a type of online gambling where players win real money. Players can place bets on the outcome of a lottery drawing by selecting numbers and paying an entry fee. The prize money may be used to buy goods or services or to fund charitable activities. Online lottery games are usually regulated by the state in which they operate, although some are operated under federal laws. Some are purely voluntary, while others require players to pay a fee to participate. In some cases, the fee is a percentage of the base lottery price. The majority of Internet lottery games are run by private companies, rather than the states. Currently, the largest lottery online company is GTech Corporation, headquartered in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, with 70% of worldwide business.

New Zealand Lottery

New Zealand has a national lottery, known as the Lotto, which was created in 1987 and replaced New Zealand’s original two lotteries. In addition to the Lotto, the Lottery has several other games, including Keno and Instant Kiwi scratch cards. Proceeds from the Lotto are distributed by the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board to a wide variety of community groups and charities.

Canada has four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced the old Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. The Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a consortium of five regional lottery commissions owned by their provincial/territorial governments, runs the national games. The provincial and territorial lotteries are Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the Northwest Territories), and Quebecor Inc.

In Laos, government officials are rigging the lottery system to avoid large payouts, sources in the communist country tell RFA’s Lao Service. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number for the national lottery, 509, disappeared from purchased tickets until it reappeared as a result of demand.

Other sources allege that the winning numbers are manipulated by lottery officials to avoid a large pay-out. They say that the business interests that run the lottery include members of the nation’s ruling elite and have little oversight from the government. However, the prime minister’s office denied that claims in an Aug. 17 directive that instructed the ministry overseeing the legal state lottery to reduce the frequency of drawings and ensure that winnings are handled fairly. The directive was sent to the Ministry of Finance and will be implemented soon, a source told RFA’s Lao service. It also ordered the Ministry to work with local authorities to crack down on informal football and lottery chances sold through mobile phone text messaging services. In addition, it will close down unauthorized online lottery sites that allow people to purchase chance entries for the state lottery from outside the country.
