Lotteries are popular around the world and are a great source of revenue for state governments. In the United States, there are more than 100 lotteries and approximately 400,000 retail outlets that sell lottery tickets. Many of these lotteries are operated by state governments, while others are independent or private corporations. In addition to selling tickets, some state lotteries also operate gaming facilities. These gambling establishments offer a variety of games, including poker, video lottery terminals, and horse racing.

While gambling is illegal in most of the country, there are some Special Economic Zones that allow for gambling. However, the government has recently begun cracking down on these casinos. However, players from Laos can still play at a number of online casinos without risking getting caught. The most popular games are roulette, blackjack and baccarat.

In New Zealand, the Lottery is controlled by the Government through an autonomous Crown entity, Lotto New Zealand (formally the New Zealand Lotteries Commission). Lottery profits are distributed to a wide range of charitable and community organizations across the country. These include Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Creative New Zealand, and the New Zealand Film Commission. In addition, the Foundation for a Sustainable Environment and the New Zealand National Library are recipients of Lottery funds.

The first lotteries were purely recreational activities, but they became a major source of public funding after they began to be used to fund important public projects, such as bridges and schools. In the early 19th century, private business interests entered the lotteries arena. Instant lottery tickets, or scratch cards, were introduced in the 1970s and are now a significant source of lottery revenue.

Today, lottery games are regulated at the federal and provincial levels. In Canada, four nationwide lotteries are offered: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. The Interprovincial Lottery Corporation oversees the operations of these four lottery commissions: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavut).

In Australia, Lottery operators are licensed at a state or territory level. The largest operator is Tatts Group, which holds a license in every State and Territory. In addition, two licensed re-sellers, Netlotto Pty Ltd and Jumbo Interactive, operate lottery products in the online market. In the United States, large portions of state lottery profits are used to fund public education systems.
