In this talk, Charles (Chip) Zuckerman will explore the history of Laos’s state-owned lotteries since 1975 and how they have been rationalized as an economic activity that is coherent with socialist goals. He will also discuss what he found when doing ethnographic research in Luang Prabang in 2013-2016, with a particular focus on what playing the lottery and choosing numbers meant for local people.
