Lao state officials are rigging the country’s national lottery, according to reports. Drawings in the communist nation often show numbers that disappear from purchased tickets, and winning numbers are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be chosen. In one case, the number 509 appeared only as a five on tickets sold throughout the day of the Oct. 14 drawing, a source told RFA’s Lao Service. This number was associated in Laos with the buffalo, a symbol of good fortune, and many people wanted to pick it. But the number was changed only an hour before the scheduled drawing, the source said.
