The number 9 was also omitted from the tickets, as it is considered unlucky in Laos.
While the Internet has enabled people to play lottery-style games from home, it has also created new opportunities for scam artists. Some lottery-style websites charge a premium on the base price of the ticket, and others use the names of real lottery companies in an attempt to lure customers. Some websites have even been linked to organized crime.
Despite the risks, lottery online remains a lucrative business for the major gaming software providers. GTech Corporation, based in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, oversees 70% of the worldwide lottery-style game market, according to industry estimates. Other leading software companies include Playtech and iSoftBet. The former is the world’s largest operator of instant lottery games. The latter is the world’s third-largest lottery provider. The company’s products include iLottery and iLotto. Both companies have been involved in numerous lawsuits related to their online offerings.
