Lottery online is a popular way to play the national lottery and other types of games. Lottery games include scratch cards, keno and video lottery terminals (slot machines in all but name). Lottery games are legal in some jurisdictions, but many governments have passed laws that prohibit their operation. Lottery games are also available through the Internet, and the number of people playing them is increasing rapidly.

Lotteries have been around for centuries and were once widely used by governments to raise money for public purposes. In the early 21st century, there have been many innovations in the field of online lotteries, including instant lottery tickets and e-lottery games. The most recent innovation is the creation of private lottery sites where players can compete with each other and win cash prizes without being subject to gambling laws.

The state-controlled Lottery of Liechtenstein was one of the first organizations to offer its services over the Internet. It also pioneered the use of digital security to protect data and transactions. In addition to its traditional operations, the foundation sponsors charitable projects and organizations domestically and abroad. The Foundation operates many websites, referred to collectively as the ILLF brands.

Several companies provide online lottery services in the United States. Some of them operate as a standalone company, while others are part of larger technology firms that also produce online gaming software or offer other services such as payment processing. These companies are known as lottery agents, or third party providers. These companies can either host the entire game, or provide a platform that allows the customer to select their own numbers.

In Canada, the government regulates lottery systems at a provincial level. It oversees four nationwide games: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced the Super 7 lottery in September 2009), Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. In addition, it manages the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a consortium of five regional lotteries owned by their respective provincial and territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Northwest Territories and Yukon).

For poor Vietnamese people like Huong, selling lottery tickets is one of the few ways to make a living. On good days, she can sell 250 lottery tickets, which brings in a profit of about 10 US-Dollars per day. On bad days, she only makes 160 tickets, which is not enough to support her and her son. She chooses to sell lottery tickets instead of begging, as begging is considered socially detested in Vietnam.
