In addition, the lottery has expanded to include a number of other gambling activities, such as sports betting and horse racing.
Although the lottery is not a legal form of gambling, some governments have established it as a tool for raising revenue. The United States, for example, has a state-controlled lottery that raises millions of dollars annually. In addition, the country has a federally-controlled lottery that offers jackpots of up to $2 million.
In the communist nation of Laos, lottery officials have been accused of rigging the system. In recent drawings, winning numbers have mysteriously disappeared from purchased tickets. The officials deny the accusations, but the state’s top financial supervisor has sent a directive calling for drawing times to be reduced and winnings to be handled in a more transparent manner. The directive was reportedly sent from the office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith on Aug. 17. Lao Deputy Finance Minister Sila Viengkeot told RFA that the provisions of the directive will be enforced. However, he did not specify when the changes would take effect. He also declined to comment on the allegations of rigging.
