One Vientiane resident claims that the heavier balls fall down the hole more quickly and therefore are more likely to be chosen as winners than lighter ones. A finance ministry official serving on the committee that oversees the lottery dismissed the accusation, telling RFA that the committee double checks the ball weights after every drawing.
Despite its small size, the New Zealand lottery has a big impact on the local economy and is the country’s biggest source of charitable funding. Its proceeds are used for a wide range of social and sporting activities, from preserving the environment to promoting education.
