In the United States, state and local governments regulate state-based lotteries that offer a variety of prizes to players. These prizes may include cash, merchandise or services. Lottery games are also available through a variety of private companies. Some of these private lotteries are regulated by federal law while others are not. Those that are regulated often have stricter rules and regulations regarding player safety.

Some of the most popular lotteries include Mega Millions, Powerball and European EuroMillions. The former is the largest in the world and has a top prize of over USD$2.4 billion. The latter is operated by the Camelot Group and offers a top prize of EUR4 million. Both of these lotteries use a combination of random and skill-based numbers.

The government-controlled lottery in Liechtenstein is known as the International Lottery Foundation (ILLF). This organization pioneered the introduction of the Internet into gaming and incorporated instant scratchcard games into its lineup. In addition, the ILLF supports charitable projects and organizations in its native country as well as internationally. The ILLF also operates the first lottery website and processing system on the web, PLUSLOTTO.

In Canada, a lottery is operated by the provincial and territorial governments through interprovincial organizations. These are the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut). The Canadian provinces also operate their own standalone lotteries.

In Laos, state-run lotteries are notoriously rigged, sources in the communist nation say. Drawings frequently show numbers that disappear from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and thus unlikely to be selected, RFA’s Lao Service reported in an Oct. 14 story. The number 509, for example, vanished from tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing and appeared as 134 an hour before the drawing began, according to one source.
