The government in the communist nation of Laos is rigging the national lottery, manipulating winning numbers to avoid large pay-outs, sources in the Southeast Asian country say. The numbers 09, for example, vanished from purchased tickets during a drawing on Oct. 14 this year, a resident of the capital Vientiane told RFA’s Lao Service. The company responsible for the lottery is owned by private business interests with connections to the ruling elite, the caller said. “Hopefully the government will resume control of the national lottery, because the drawings can’t be trusted when they are run by private business interests,” he added.
