These regulations were not intended to prevent the creation of private lotteries, but rather to protect the public from unlicensed operations.
After the enactment of these regulations, many private lotteries were established, but most of them closed in the aftermath of World War II. However, some new private lotteries were created after the war and are still in operation today.
Today, there are four nationwide lotteries in Canada: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. These lotteries are administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which is a consortium of the five regional lottery commissions owned by the provincial and territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Quebecor Inc. (Quebec), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and British Columbia).
In addition to traditional lottery games, the Internet has seen the growth of online games modeled after lottery play. These online games typically charge premiums on the base lottery price and are often marketed as lottery games. While the legality of these games remains contested, they are often marketed to persons who would not otherwise have purchased a real-world lottery ticket.
