Lottery officials in the communist country of Laos are rigging the national lottery system, causing numbers to disappear from purchased tickets or be deemed unlucky, sources tell RFA’s Lao Service. The winning numbers for a recent drawing, for example, showed up as 5 on the purchased tickets but disappeared from the official results shortly afterward, a source told RFA.
Until the Laos state lottery is brought back under public control, local business interests should be excluded from its operations, a caller to RFA’s Lao Service said. These business interests include individuals who have close connections to the ruling elite, he added. These individuals should not be allowed to manage the lottery, because the drawings can’t be trusted, he added.
