Lottery online is a game of chance in which players attempt to win a prize by matching numbers to winning combinations. The prize money may be a cash amount, a car or a vacation. Some countries have national games that award large prizes, while others operate local games with much smaller prizes. Many of these games are regulated and operated by a government agency. Other countries have decentralized lottery systems that allow private companies to sell tickets and conduct draws. In Canada, the first nationwide lottery was launched in 1967. This was the result of a federal Liberal government initiative to update outdated laws. Pierre Trudeau sponsored the Omnibus Bill, which included an amendment concerning lotteries. Until this time, lottery tickets had been considered illegal under the Criminal Code of Canada. However, the Quebec City mayor Jean Drapeau had devised a way to circumvent this law. In exchange for a $2.00 “donation” players could participate in a drawing. The prize was a silver bar, and participants had to answer four questions about Montreal to win it.
This was a huge success, and the Canadian government began to support lotteries at the provincial level. Today, there are four national lotteries in Canada: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. These are administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which is a consortium of five regional lottery commissions owned by their respective provincial/territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia).
New Zealand’s lottery is controlled by an autonomous Crown entity called the Lotto New Zealand Commission. It operates the national Lotto, Keno, Bullseye and Instant Kiwi scratch card games. The profits are primarily distributed to statutory agencies such as Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission, as well as community groups.
For the poor people of Vietnam, selling lottery tickets is one of the few options they have for earning a living. Because begging is socially detested, these individuals choose the less prestigious but more lucrative job of selling tickets. On a good day, a lottery ticket seller can make up to 250 000 VN-Dong (1 US-Dollar). It is enough for them to feed themselves and their families.
