In the US, state-run lotteries have a long history, with the first public lottery in the United States being created by King Francis I of France in or around 1505. In the 19th century, private lotteries began to be more popular, with many companies gaining patents on new types of lottery games (these would be called business method patents in today’s vernacular). The lottery industry saw significant growth with the introduction of instantaneous games, which were very similar to the modern games but used computerized drawing systems to generate numbers.
The New Zealand national lottery, Lotto, is controlled by the Government through an autonomous Crown entity, Lottery New Zealand (formerly the New Zealand Lotteries Commission). Lottery profits are distributed by the Lottery Grants Board to a variety of community and sports organizations. These include Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Creative New Zealand, and the New Zealand Film Commission. In addition, Lotto also supports a number of community initiatives through its Education Lottery.
There are four nationwide lotteries in Canada, operated by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced the former Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. Each lottery game is governed by its own rules and regulations, as set out in each province or territory’s gaming legislation. The Interprovincial Lottery Corporation is a consortium of the five regional lotteries owned by their respective provincial/territorial governments: Atlantic Canada Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut).
In addition to the main state-run lottery in Laos, there are several privately run lotteries offering a wide range of games. In the case of Spain, the most important is the yearly Christmas Lottery (Loterias y Apuestas del Estado), which draws millions of euros each year, and has become the largest annual lottery in Europe. There is also a pan-European lottery called EuroMillions, managed by the Camelot Group.
