Its distribution is guided by the Lottery Grants Board, a statutory body, but Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission operate autonomously in distributing their allocations from the Lottery Grants Board. The New Zealand Lottery has four games: the Lotto, Powerball and Strike, Keno, and Instant Kiwi scratch cards.
The most popular lottery games in the world are the national lotteries, which offer huge prizes with a relatively low cost per ticket. The most common jackpot prize is a cash prize, often for millions of dollars or more. Other common prizes are vacations and cars, home or other appliances, and sporting event tickets. In addition, some countries have private lotteries, where a small percentage of the proceeds from the sale of tickets go to benefit a specific cause.
In Canada, until 1967 buying a ticket in the Irish Sweepstakes was illegal. That year, the federal Liberal government introduced a special law (an Omnibus Bill) to bring up-to-date a number of obsolete laws. Pierre Trudeau, who was the minister of justice at the time, inserted an amendment concerning lotteries. Today, Canada has four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced the Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. The Canadian lotteries are administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which is a consortium of five regional lottery commissions owned by their respective provincial and territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), Quebecor Ltd. (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Manitoba Liquor Control Board (Manitoba) and British Columbia Lottery and Gaming Corporation (British Columbia).
