Lao government officials are rigging the country’s official state lottery, sources in the communist nation tell RFA. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number 509 disappeared from many ticket purchases before the drawing and appeared only as 134 on those sold throughout the day, one source told RFA’s Lao service.
A similar incident occurred earlier this month, when the winning number of a drawing was announced as 134, and then changed only 10 minutes before the scheduled event to 662. The source, who asked for anonymity, said the change was done in order to prevent large pay-outs.
Despite these concerns, the national lottery is a major source of revenue in Laos and provides jobs to thousands of employees.
