For many poor Vietnamese, selling lottery tickets is their only source of income. They prefer this over begging, which is socially detested and can be dangerous. On good days, Huong, a single mother of two, sells about 250 tickets and earns up to 230 000 VN-Dong (about 10 US-Dollars). She works with her husband, Manh, who assists her in the 16-hour shift. On bad days, the couple sells less than half that amount. They make enough to survive but not enough for the family to live comfortably. Huong’s only hope of a better life is the baby she is expecting in September.
