For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number 509 appeared only as a five on purchased tickets until shortly before the drawing.

For poor Vietnamese, selling lottery tickets is a source of income. They choose this over the socially detested act of begging because they feel it is safer and more lucrative. On a good day, they can make up to 230 000 VN-Dong ($10 US-Dollars). It is not enough to live off but it is much better than nothing. It is the only way they can keep their family from going hungry.
