A woman who sells tickets for a local lottery in Hanoi, named Huong, earns around US$ 250 a day, on average. She works with her husband and depends on the amount of money they make to pay for their daily meals. The couple has been doing the business for about a year. On good days they sell more than 200 tickets, while on bad days they sell less.
In addition to the online lotteries, some Lao businesses are profiting from allowing their employees to buy and sell the country’s legal state lottery tickets. This is done by paying the employees a small commission for each ticket they sell. This practice has been criticized as corrupt and unfair to the workers. However, the companies are able to hide this issue by operating in special economic zones where laws governing the sale of lottery tickets are relaxed.
