Among other things, the directive calls for the state lottery to reduce its drawings from four times a week to twice a week and to end its scratch-card lottery.
The directive will be strictly enforced, the deputy finance minister and state lottery supervisor Sila Viengkeo told RFA’s Lao Service. The office is also investigating allegations that lottery officials rig the drawing system to avoid paying out large payouts. Those who have won the lottery must schedule an appointment to redeem their tickets at lottery headquarters, where they must show identification and proof of social security or tax ID number. Retailers are not authorized to redeem winning tickets larger than $600. Winnings from the Maryland Lottery are subject to federal taxes.
