Lao lottery officials are rigging the system to avoid large pay-outs, sources in the communist country say. Drawings in the national lottery, held three times a week, often show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be picked. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number 509 appeared only as a five on tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing, RFA’s Lao Service learned from a source who spoke on condition of anonymity.
