The lottery business is growing worldwide, with online lotteries accounting for around 70% of the market. Unlike traditional gaming operations, which must comply with strict gambling laws, lottery-style games are often exempt from regulation. A number of US patents have been granted on these types of games, but the business has been slow to take off due to the high cost of development and marketing. Nevertheless, there are now many companies that offer web-based lottery services, including instant lotteries, with some allowing players to purchase tickets for the same price as traditional ones.
The most popular lotteries in the world are those operated by state governments. There is also a state-run online lottery in Vietnam called the Lottery of the People. It has a reputation for being honest, efficient and reliable. Its website is easy to navigate, and you can register for an account without having to submit any personal information. Once registered, you can choose your numbers from a list of numbers and check the results of previous drawings.
A recent winner of the Hanoi lotto told RFA that she would use her winnings to invest in her family’s future and to pay for college for her children. She also plans to spend some of the money on travel. “I’d like to visit South Korea, Japan and Vietnam,” she said.
While the government has a legal right to manage the lottery, critics say that it has failed to do so properly. A Lao official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told RFA that the business interests involved in the lottery include members of the country’s ruling elite. The official added that it is unclear how much the companies involved pay the government each year for the concession, and no one monitors them.
For some poor Vietnamese citizens, selling lottery tickets is their only source of income. A single mother from Saigon told RFA that she sells lottery tickets to earn about 230 000 VN-Dong per day, or about 10 US-Dollars. For her, this is more than enough to feed her and her baby. She says she prefers to sell lottery tickets than engage in the socially detested practice of begging.
