In the United States, the lottery is one of the most popular forms of gambling. It raises funds for various government programs and provides a source of revenue for state governments. In Vietnam, there are a number of legal state-sponsored lotteries. The government has recently taken steps to crack down on illegal lotteries. These include reducing the number of drawings and improving the transparency of winnings. In addition, the government has stepped up inspections of lottery vendors and prohibited gambling sites from offering betting on football matches. Informal football lotteries and lottery chances purchased by short messaging service are also being eliminated. Lottery agents are required to register with the authorities and are subject to taxation. They are also prohibited from selling tickets to minors. Despite these restrictions, the number of lottery vendors is high. They have sprung up across the country, especially in urban areas. Local stores sell tickets for 9 000 VN-Dong, 40 US-Cents, to individual sellers who strive around the streets of Saigon to make their money. Often the ticket seller makes only a few dollars per day. As a result, many lottery vendors do not make enough money to support their families.
