Often, winning numbers appear to disappear from purchased tickets before the drawing takes place. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number 509 appeared only as a 5 on tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing. But after the draw, the number reappeared as 134—a number associated with the buffalo, which is seen as a symbol of good luck in Laos.
