Private business interests controlling the state lottery in the communist nation of Laos are rigging the system to avoid large pay-outs, sources in the country tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings for the official national lottery have been rigged to show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be chosen, sources say. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number 509 was listed as 0 throughout the day before the drawing but appeared only as 5 on the ticket for that evening’s drawing.
The company that operates the state lottery in Laos, BCorp – Berjaya Gia Thinh (Berjaya GTI), was set up in Labuan with 80 percent stockholder equity belonging to the Malaysian firm BToto and 20 percent of shares owned by BCorp. The company reportedly has a contract with the Vietnamese government to operate computerized lotteries in the country under the name Vietlott.
