Lottery officials in the communist state of Laos are rigging the system, manipulating winning numbers to avoid large pay-outs, sources in the country told RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings for the state-run national lottery have been shown to contain missing numbers and erroneous information that can’t be trusted, they say.
The company behind Vietnam’s first computerized lottery, Vietlott, is a Malaysian joint venture between Berjaya Corp Bhd (BCorp) and Berjaya Sports Toto Bhd (BToto). It was awarded a license to operate computerized lotteries in the country in early 2016.
BCorp is the majority stockholder in the project while BToto holds the remaining 20 percent. In its first month of operation, the company reported earnings of VND40.1 billion. It plans to set up 800 points of sales in all districts and communes of HCM City and 10,000 across the country within five years. It is expected to contribute over $2 billion to the government budget this year. It is also a partner in a multi-billion dollar project to build a casino in the northern Vietnamese province of Bac phuong.
