In Laos, the government recently sent a directive to the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the country’s legal state lottery, requesting that it work with the Ministry of Public Security to better manage the problem, sources told RFA’s Lao service. The directive called for drawing frequency to be reduced, and winnings handled in a more transparent manner. It also requested that informal football and lottery chances sold by short messaging services be halted. The directive was signed by Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith on Aug. 17.
