The government says it has acted to clean up the system. But many complain that the move hasn’t gone far enough. In a bid to curb alleged corruption, Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith’s office issued a directive on Aug. 17 requiring the ministry that oversees the state lottery to work with other ministries to improve management. The directive also calls for reducing the number of weekly drawings and making winnings more transparent. A spokesperson for the ministry told RFA that a date has not yet been set to implement the changes. But he stressed that the directive was in line with the government’s commitment to transparency.
