The Laos government has recently taken steps to tighten control of the country’s illegal state lottery, according to reports by RFA’s Lao Service. On Aug. 17, the office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive to the Ministry of Finance to work with the government’s ministry overseeing the state lottery. The directive stipulates that state lottery drawings must be reduced to one per week, and winnings must be handled in a more transparent manner. It also orders the Ministry of Finance to take steps to close down informal football lotteries and lottery chances sold through short messaging service, as well as those conducted by private individuals.
New Zealand operates a national lottery called Lotto, which offers a variety of games including Keno and the Instant Kiwi scratch card games. Lottery profits are distributed by the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board directly to community organizations and charities, such as Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission. The New Zealand Lottery is run by the Lottery Commission, which is a Crown entity.
In Canada, lottery operations are operated by interprovincial and provincial lotteries. Each province has a provincial lottery corporation that is owned and operated by its provincial or territorial government. Licensed lottery operators include Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island), Loto-Quebec, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and Western Canada Lottery Corporation.
