She and her husband Manh work 16 hours a day, striving to sell as many tickets as possible on good days to earn 230 000 VN-Dong (about 10 US-Dollars). They start the day with a light breakfast of rice and vegetable soup, then hit the streets of the city. If they are lucky, their daily profit amounts to about 250 lottery tickets. If they’re not, the couple is left with nothing. Nevertheless, they prefer selling tickets to the socially detested act of begging because they don’t want to lose face. Huong is currently pregnant and hopes to have a son soon. She says that without the lottery ticket sales, they would have to rely on the help of relatives. Huong’s story demonstrates how difficult it is for the poorest members of society in Vietnam to escape poverty.
