Thai Lotto (Thai Lotterie Office or GLO) operates an official national lottery with draws taking place every first and 16th of the month, offering several prizes including a jackpot prize of 10 Million Baht.
The GLO regulates the operation of the lottery by setting minimum ticket prices and prohibiting their sale at inflated prices. Vendors must register with them, selling only at official ticket prices and displaying winning numbers after each draw. Unfortunately, lottery agents often mark up ticket prices to increase profits despite these regulations, though efforts are underway by GLO to curtail such activities.
Thais have long held onto a belief that certain numbers are auspicious, which often has its origin in Buddhism’s emphasis on doing good deeds to earn rewards from heaven. Thus many Buddhists buy lottery tickets to gain merit and bless those they’ve lost through Buddhist blessings from beyond.
Thai lottery tickets are manufactured using pre-printed, counterfeit-resistant designs and sold only as “ticket pairs.” Individual tickets cost 80 baht while pairs cost 160. To reduce fraud, officials use special watermarks and chemicals during printing processes to prevent counterfeit tickets.
Though these security measures are a positive step forward, there are still various methods people employ to beat the system and win Thai Lotto. Some think numbers with repeating patterns, like 777 or 4444, have higher chances of being winners; whereas some believe if a number appears in a dream it is your lucky number.
Another strategy people employ when trying to win Thai lotto is consulting a fortuneteller or sorcerer, often by consulting the ghost of someone they have passed on for guidance or signs that their number is the winning one. Or they could visit Mae Nak’s shrine on Sukhumvit Soi 77 where there is a clay pot filled with numbered ping pong balls for divination; visitors come asking for anything from help making difficult decisions to financial miracles!
Foreigners can play Thai Lotto, although they cannot win its top jackpot prize of 10 million ($1.34m). But they still may be eligible to collect smaller prizes like mobile phones or motorcycles if they present their passport and signed winning ticket to any local lottery office – in some instances this may involve traveling to Bangkok’s Government Lottery Office headquarters to verify their identity to ensure they are indeed legitimate winners; otherwise the prize money could be confiscated by authorities.
