For example, the winning number for the Oct. 14 drawing was 509, but appeared only as 5 on sold tickets throughout the day of that drawing, a source told RFA’s Lao Service.
Another source said the companies responsible for the lottery’s work include people with connections to the ruling elite. He added that the state should regain control of the national lottery, which is currently being run by private business interests with links to government officials.
Regardless of the outcome of the latest state lottery drawing, a local lawmaker has called on authorities to do more to protect the public from fraudulent schemes and improve transparency in the lottery industry. He urged the ministry of finance to investigate and prosecute anyone involved in illegal lottery activities, including the sale of fake lottery chances through mobile phone short messaging services.
